Refugees and Migrants in a Globalised World: Responsibility and Responses of Universities

The first conference of the RME Network took place at the Pontificia Università Gregoriana in Rome/Italy in November 2017. The four days of the event not only saw best practices in the field of migrant and refugee education but also connected researchers and institutions from all over the world working for the well-being of those who left their homes behind in search for a better future.
The conference concluded with an audience with Pope Francis who urged the participants that universities have a special duty of studying causes of remote migration, but that it “is likewise important to take into account the reactions — negative in principle, at times even discriminatory and xenophobic — that the arrival of migrants is generating in countries of ancient Christian Tradition, in order to recommend programs for educating consciences.”
