More than 40 universities, NGOs and not-for-profit organizations have become founding members of the RME Network during our inaugural conference in Rome in 2017. Together, we have joined forces to collaborate on refugee and migrant education. But we will not stop here! Our goal is to continuously expand the network and welcome new members who are able to contribute to achieving our objectives and engage in teaching, researching and/or providing educational services to or about migrants and refugees. We encourage our members to participate in our network in a practical, engaged and active way. Those who have joined us so far are universities and not-for-profit organizations who have already established in working for the well-being of migrants and refugees. Becker Description Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL), founded in 2010, provides quality higher education opportunities to marginalized communities – be it through poverty, location, lack of opportunity, conflict or forced displacement – around the world. A global partnership of organizations and institutions, we believe education fosters hope for a more peaceful and humane world. We draw on the rich tradition of Jesuit higher education and the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm structured around experience, reflection, action, and evaluation. In partnership with higher education institutions and universities, we offer internationally-certified courses and degrees to students in challenging contexts, using innovative education technology solutions. Our students are forming learning communities at the local level as well as worldwide, through virtual classrooms, accompanied by local tutors and online faculties. Education is a key instrument and indicator of development, economic growth, peace, and is the foundation for building open societies. JWL contributes to the advancement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, reaching students in the areas with the lowest levels of human development. Our blended learning programmes are responding to the needs of marginalized communities, forming open-minded, critical-thinking individuals to become the leaders of tomorrow, building the capacity of students to serve their communities at the margins and in refugee camps. They form a global community of learners, learning together to transform the world. CUE welcomes students of all cultures, faiths, and backgrounds, to come study in an environment of tolerance and academic excellence, promoting quality, dignity, and justice. It is doing that by having structures that give the Christian community a major sense of worth and belonging. When the first IDPs (Internally Displaced Person) fled to Kurdistan in August 2014, they had no jobs, housing or money. Temporary schools were set up but those who had been previously studying at university but who had no chance to continue their higher education. CUE was established to cater for the continuing education of these students, most of them coming from Qaraqosh. The university currently provides the following academic degrees: Accounting, Computer Sciences, Economics, English Language, International Relations, IT. Due to the high demand for Medical colleges (Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentist, Health Sciences), Engineer, and Science, which have been expressed through social media and from High School Students attending (Open Day) in the university, CUE is intending to open new departments according to its five years strategic plan. The vision of CUE is to be a “pioneer in choosing students, Faculty Members and design the best academic program.” It is in line with its mission of creativity, innovation and the desire to challenge reality in both directions, how to teach students and choose the faculty and the intellectual ambition of the university itself to interact with the community. Since 2004, ACU has been involved in delivering higher education on the Thai-Myanmar border to refugees, particularly persecuted ethnic groups, who have fled decades of violence and civil war in Myanmar. Here, ACU offers an 18-month foundational Liberal Arts diploma education – equivalent to one year of a Bachelor of Arts degree – in eight broad subjects; and a half-course four-unit certificate. The program aims to provide a gateway into further tertiary education, into critical positions in community-based organisations (CBOs) or NGOs, and to help shape the future leaders of Myanmar communities. The diploma includes units on English language skills, international relations and human rights, geography, history and global health, and development and education, in partnership with York University. ACU has pioneered a unique, community-embedded approach to tertiary education in crisis contexts, centred on safe and comfortable learning centres and English-language tutors located within (and connected with) communities of displaced people. In partnership with the Marist Asia Foundation in Thailand, the ACU’s diploma program provides face-to-face teaching from visiting academics in a flipped classroom approach and also regular email and videoconference with academics in Australia. To date, more than 250 students on the Thai-Myanmar border have graduated with the ACU Diploma of Liberal Studies qualification. While the majority of these students do not have recognised high school qualifications, the award of the diploma qualification means that universities across Asia, Australia, North America, and Europe, have accepted them for further tertiary-level education. Beyond further study, ACU’s Thai-Burma program graduates continue to gain employment in NGOs and CBOs as teachers or community leaders, and in the business sector as well. Current and planned initiatives ACU offers a regionally and globally recognised University qualification in the Liberal Arts, using high-quality curricula, delivered into key community hubs on the Thai-Myanmar border through blended and on-site learning; ACU has begun a pilot study of providing teacher education and training via our Certificate in Teaching and Learning program, in our joint ACU/MAF learning centre in Ranong Thailand We are currently seeking sponsorship funds to support the education of refugees and displaced people of Myanmar who remain isolated and excluded from education on the Thai border region. The objective of the project, which has partners from seven countries, is to improve the socio-educational inclusion of refugee and migrant children. The research methodology will be designed and coordinated by a multidisciplinary team of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Comillas CIHS), being the principal researchers Isabel Muñoz and Vicente Hernández. From the generation of a database and the elaboration and analysis of key indicators of integration, a series of political recommendations on the integration of these children will be drawn up, to encourage their empowerment and achieve a more successful transition to adulthood in The host societies. To achieve this goal, IMMERSE adopts a holistic methodological approach, through co-creation processes that aim to involve all key actors (migrant children and their families, researchers, NGOs, political decision makers, members of the educational community and school institutions ) in achieving the results. IMMERSE is part of the Horizon 2020 program (SC6-MIGRATION-2018-2019-2020) under the “Social challenges” pillar, and has 11 partners from Spain, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Italy and Portugal. IUEM’s experience in international projects has positioned it, very favorably, to carry out the coordination of said project. INMERSE will be developed over the next four years.
If you are interested in becoming a member of the RME Network, please get in touch.
